Week 4

Week five has been busy! We had drills, patchwork, a field trip, and a formal assembly. A quick reminder on formal dress, the boys need to wear pants not shorts. This weekend you will be able to sign up for conferences, we are so excited to see everyone again! Monday are yearbook photo retakes, please email us if your child will be getting their photo redone. Friday will be a spirit dress. Conferences are the 28th and 29th with your child’s homeroom teacher.

We have officially started a new chapter in math. We are working on addition and subtraction with regrouping this week. This is a familiar concept with our students, however the tricky part for them is learning new strategies on how to solve these problems. Be sure to look at our photos on this blog post to see all the strategies they are learning so far. You may have noticed your children carrying around bright colored flashcards. For homework every night students need to be doing at least five minutes of multiplication flashcards. My goal is by the time of conferences I will be able to tell you which facts your child needs to focus on. In science we worked on why animals eyes are different than ours. 4W will need to wrap up this concept on Monday, but the students have been loving this lesson. I have been encouraging 4R and 4W to be studying their science vocabulary flashcards every night for a few minutes. I want them to start practicing good studying habits! You will notice a picture of the science concepts we have been learning in class as well. We have one more week of a science lesson and then a test coming up!

Happy Friday!

In ELA this week we slowed down with the writing process and went back to the basics. We discussed how the brainstorming process is "organized chaos," and together we completed a class brainstorm. I was so proud of the student's effort and participation during this process. I was even more encouraged by the way students attacked their own brainstorms: messy, honest, and full of descriptive words and language. The writing process is extremely complex and I applaud the student's tenacity in tackling each stage. We will continue this writing process study next week! In Social Studies next week we will begin the different regions of the U.S.

Have a great weekend!
