Week 19

My goodness what a week! We are proud of our students for embracing the amount of work we needed to catch up on while also practicing on our play. Speaking of the play, parents please be on the lookout for an email from me tomorrow about your child’s costume. Our wonderful parents who volunteered for the play are doing an amazing job getting everything in order. There will be a few items the students will need to bring from their closet for our play. Please keep practicing lines with students and help them practice acting out their parts. The more they practice their acting the more confident they will feel. As a reminder our play is February 9th. We have two performances. One at 8:55 and the other at 11:50. Feel free to come to either performance or both!

Parent conferences are next week. Please make sure you have signed up for a slot! If you have any questions give a shout!

Our valentines celebration is coming up.❤️ We will celebrate on the 14th. A few key items. Students need to bring the same thing for everyone in the room. Students are welcome to bring cards/treats to put in the valentine bags they decorate in class. We do not do special items or gifts for certain friends.

We have an official date to take Harris Hillman iceskating. We will be going February 29th. Katie and I will send out more information about the field trip as we get closer to the date.

I must say I am impressed 4R and 4W got so much done in our class! In math this week we worked on how we compare fractions (using three different methods) and how we place fractions on a number line. I think it was a unanimous vote that every student preferred the “super lazy way” to compare fractions. 4R had time today to do independent practice in a fun/engaging way. Students were put with a partner, given a worksheet, one dice, and a pencil. One person would roll the dice while the other started their math problems. When the dice roller rolls a 6, the student working must stop, they switch, and the student who was rolling now begins their work while the other has to roll a 6. Whoever finishes their worksheet first won! The students had a blast and even convinced me to compete against them. I will let the 4R students fill you in on who won. 4W will get to do this next week! Next week we will work on ordering fractions with different denominators on a number line, however we will be working on our class play during class time as well.

Science this week might have been the highlight for our students. Students worked on understanding the concept of gravitational energy. This was done by students working in groups of four, given a set of instructions to build a rollercoaster, and using two marbles to test their ride to make sure no one could be harmed. After completing this lab students are able to understand how height/gravity can play a big part in energy along with learning about energy transferring from one object to another.

Graded work for math and science will be sent home Wednesday. All graded work will be stapled together with a parent signature sheet on the front that has a list of the graded assignments.

Happy Friday!

Whew... What a week! Getting back into that school routine after a snow week has been a challenge, but I'm proud of all 4R/W kiddos for pushing through and remembering classroom and school expectations.

We F I N A L L Y finished The Great Shelby Holmes and I'm aiming to squeeze in one last writing assignment before conferences next week! Check out our class instagram page @misswickestigers for a super sweet video of 4R friends finishing the book! We will have a bit of a break before beginning our next class novel. Much of our class time over the next two and a half weeks will be spent on rehearsing for our class play. Look for an announcement about our next class novel around mid February!

Our next, and last :), regions map quiz will be on Wednesday 1/31. Students have their maps and should continue to study them over the weekend. Students can also use this website to help them study: https://www.sporcle.com/games/scole9179/identify-the-western-states (THIS IS THE EXACT MAP THE STUDENTS HAVE!!!!).

Graded work will be sent home next Wednesday. Graded work will now be sent home in a yellow folder. The front sheet in the folder will list each graded assignment. Tests, projects, and quizzes that are eligible for retakes will be highlighted in yellow. No other assignments are eligible for retakes. Missing work will be highlighted in blue. Students will have until the date listed on the sheet to return corrections or submit missing work. Work will not be accepted after the date listed on the paper. A parent signature is required at the bottom of the parent communication. The entire yellow folder, including the graded work, are due back to me with a parent signature by the date listed on the sheet. This is to ensure that I know graded work is being shared with parents. I have discussed these new expectations with students.

Let me know if you have any questions!

~Katie
