Week 1

The first full week is complete! We are so proud of our fourth graders for being patient with themselves trying to adapt to our fourth grade schedule. A few things to mention first! Smart watches are not allowed in the classroom. Students may keep them in their backpack and put them on at the end of the day. Let us know if you have any questions about this. Second, we noticed there was a date mixup on the handouts from parent night. The Biography Fair is on April 24th. Next week is our first spirit assembly!

This week in math and science we have been extremely busy! We have been working on getting into the routine of our classroom checklist along with expectations. Students practiced how DSR (daily math work) and Science Journals (daily science research) work into our classroom routine. This week students researched who created the first electronic calculator, ways robots help us today, and they had to think of ways to improve x-rays.

Along with this routine we have been learning a lot in math! Our first unit is working on place value, being able to compare numbers, along with learning new vocabulary (expanded form, ascending, and descending). We will continue with this unit. Next week I will start re-recording my math lessons for any student that may need help at home. Students have been enjoying having science almost every day. We began with a lesson on knowing the difference between literal vs inferential thinking when making observations. We have just started our first unit on the human machine. This weeks discussion is knowing how we move using muscles, tendons, and bones. Next week we will create a finger to have students fully understand the concept.

Happy Friday!

This week in Language Arts we began our first class novel, Charlotte's Web! We had a very fun time assigning roles for the first 3 chapters, and experiencing a reader's theatre as classmates read aloud chapters from the book. Next week with Charlotte's Web, we will begin identifying figurative language and practice annotating in the books. We will also deepen our understanding of the plot by identifying characters, settings, and points of view.

In social studies this week we began learning the 7 different continents. Students created their own map of the world and identified each different continent. Next week, we will practice identifying continents using flashcards and add the oceans to our world map!

Our first "star students" received their posters to take home and fill in this weekend. Our classes are so excited to learn more about Drayke (4W) and Will (4R)!
